To make a gaming video, record your session with game audio and your mic on separate tracks. Then find the few moments worth watching and cut them into a 16:9 highlight video or 9:16 Shorts. Add captions, export at the frame rate you recorded, and post. The hard part is not the software. It is finding the moments.

## Why do most gaming videos never get finished?

You probably have the folder already: a three hour recording, a plan to “edit it this weekend”, and no video. Scrubbing a long session for the 40 seconds that matter takes longer than playing it did. By the time you find the clutch from the second match, the next session is already recorded.

The cost is simple. Every session you don’t cut is a clip nobody sees. Channels that grow post often, and posting often is impossible when one video eats a whole evening.

So the method below is built around one rule: decide what to keep fast, then spend your editing time only on that.

## What do you need before you start?

You need three things, and none of them has to cost money.

1. **A recorder.** OBS Studio is free on Windows and macOS. On Windows, the Xbox Game Bar (Win+Alt+R) and NVIDIA’s instant replay also work. Our guides to [recording gameplay on PC](https://gameclip.io/blog/how-to-record-gameplay-on-pc) and [recording gameplay on a Mac](https://gameclip.io/blog/how-to-record-gameplay-on-mac) cover the settings.
2. **An editor.** DaVinci Resolve and CapCut are free; Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro are paid. See [the editors compared](https://gameclip.io/blog/best-video-editing-software-for-gaming).
3. **A target.** Decide before you record whether this session becomes a YouTube video or Shorts. It changes what you keep.

## How do you make a gaming video, step by step?

1. **Record with separate audio tracks.** Put game sound on one track and your microphone on another. You can then lower the game under your voice, or mute a teammate, without re-recording.
2. **Record at the frame rate you will publish.** 60 fps for shooters and racing, 30 fps is fine for slower games. Recording at 1080p60 is a safe default on most PCs.
3. **Mark moments while you play.** A hotkey that saves the last 30 seconds (NVIDIA instant replay, Medal, or a recorder’s mark key) saves you hours later.
4. **Find the moments.** Watch your marks first, then skim the rest at 2x. Keep kills, clutches, fails and reactions. Drop the menus and the walking.
5. **Cut.** For a highlight video, keep each moment with a few seconds of setup before it. For a Short, start on the action and stop right after the payoff.
6. **Finish and export.** Add captions, a zoom on the key second, a sound effect or two, and export (see the settings table below).

## How long should a gaming video be?

It depends on where it goes. Use these as starting points, not rules.

| Format | Aspect ratio | Typical length | Platform limit (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube highlight video | 16:9 | 8 to 15 minutes | 12 hours per upload (verified accounts) |
| YouTube Shorts | 9:16 | 15 to 45 seconds | Up to 3 minutes |
| TikTok | 9:16 | 15 to 60 seconds | Up to 10 minutes (some accounts get longer uploads) |
| Instagram Reels | 9:16 | 15 to 60 seconds | Up to 3 minutes |

Short clips that loop cleanly tend to get rewatched, which is why most gaming Shorts stay under a minute. We go deeper in [gaming clips that are worth posting](https://gameclip.io/blog/gaming-clips).

## What export settings should you use?

Export at the resolution and frame rate you recorded. Upscaling 1080p to 4K adds file size, not detail.

| Resolution | Frame rate | Bitrate (H.264) |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 60 fps | 53 to 68 Mbps |

These match YouTube’s own recommended upload bitrates for SDR video. HEVC (H.265) gets similar quality at roughly half the size if your editor and GPU support it.

## How do you make the edit faster?

The slow step is step 4, finding the moments. Three habits help:

- **Mark live.** One key press during the match is worth ten minutes of scrubbing.
- **Use the waveform.** Spikes in your mic track often mean something happened, though they also catch laughing at nothing.
- **Cut one template, reuse it.** Same caption style, same webcam spot, same end card. Decide once.

Or let an app do the finding. GameClip is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that turns long gameplay recordings into a 16:9 highlight video and a set of 9:16 vertical clips. It finds moments by looking at the game, one frame per second, and scoring the action (an enemy down scores higher than a menu). Each clip comes with captions, an auto zoom, sound effects and a suggested title, and every cut stays editable in a timeline before you export. Your video stays on your computer, and it does not upload to TikTok or YouTube for you yet.

## What makes the first 3 seconds work?

Start on the action, not on the intro. Put a short line of text on screen that says what is about to happen (“1 HP, 3 enemies”), and cut the build-up to the minimum the payoff needs. If you would skip it as a viewer, cut it.

## FAQ

### What is the easiest way to make a gaming video?

Record with OBS or your GPU’s recorder, mark the good moments with a hotkey while you play, and cut only those in a free editor like CapCut or DaVinci Resolve. An auto clipping app can also find the moments for you.

### Do I need a powerful PC to make gaming videos?

Not for 1080p. Most PCs from the last few years can record 1080p60 with the GPU’s hardware encoder while gaming. Editing 4K footage smoothly is where more memory and a stronger GPU help.

### Should I make long videos or Shorts?

Both, from the same session. A 10 minute highlight video serves people who already follow you; Shorts reach people who don’t. Cutting both from one recording is the efficient way.

### Can GameClip record my gameplay?

On macOS 15 or later it has a built-in recorder with hotkeys to mark highlights while you play. The Windows recorder is not out yet, so on Windows you record with OBS or another tool and import the files.

### How long does it take to edit a gaming video?

By hand, usually longer than the footage itself, because you watch everything at least once before you cut. Marking moments while you play, or letting an app find them, cuts most of that time.

macOS and Windows

GameClip turns long gameplay into a highlight video and vertical clips.

It finds the moments, then adds captions, zooms and sound effects. Every cut stays editable before you export.
