Add Captions to Gaming Videos: Styles That Read on Phones

Nemo · · 6 min read

To add captions to a gaming video, transcribe your voice with an auto caption tool and fix the words it gets wrong. Then style the text so it stays readable over busy gameplay: a bold font, a thick outline, 2 to 4 words per line, placed above the bottom fifth of a vertical frame. Burn them into the video for TikTok, Shorts and Reels.

Captions are a small step with a clear payoff. Many people scroll with the sound off, and even with sound on, a shouted callout over gunfire is hard to catch. This guide covers how to get the words, how to make them readable over a game, and where to put them.

Do gaming videos need captions?

If there is talking in the clip, yes. Captions help in three situations:

  • Sound off. A muted viewer sees your reaction but not what you said. Captions carry the joke or the callout.
  • Loud game audio. Explosions, music and teammates drown out your voice. Captions make the line clear.
  • Accessibility. Viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing can follow the clip.

If the clip has no voice at all (pure gameplay with game sound), skip captions and use a short text hook instead. Automatic captions on a voiceless clip can invent words from game noise, which looks worse than no captions.

Burned-in captions or a subtitle file?

Type How it works Best for
Burned-in (open) captions The text is drawn into the video pixels TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, clips shared anywhere
Subtitle file (closed captions) An .srt or .vtt file the viewer can turn on or off Long YouTube videos, where viewers expect the CC button
Platform auto captions The app transcribes after upload A quick fallback; little control over style or errors

For short vertical clips, burn them in. You control the font, the size, the position and the timing, and they look the same on every app.

How do you add captions to a gaming clip, step by step?

  1. Record your voice on its own track if you can. A separate microphone track transcribes far better than a mix of voice and game audio, because the transcriber hears only you. OBS and most recorders can save tracks separately.
  2. Transcribe. Use your editor’s auto caption feature (CapCut, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve all have one) or a speech-to-text tool such as Whisper. Word-level timing lets each word appear as it is spoken.
  3. Fix the words. Game names, map callouts, player names and slang are where transcription fails, because they are rare in the speech the models learned from. Read every line once.
  4. Split the lines. 2 to 4 words per line works well for vertical video. Break at natural pauses, not in the middle of a phrase.
  5. Style for readability. See the table below.
  6. Place them in the safe area. Keep them out of the bottom 18 to 22% of a 9:16 frame and away from the right edge, where TikTok, Shorts and Reels put their own buttons and text.
  7. Burn in and export. Then watch the clip once on a phone, muted, to check that every line can be read in time.

What caption style works over gameplay?

Gameplay is a difficult background for text: it is bright, busy and always moving. These settings keep captions readable.

Setting Recommendation Why
Font A heavy display font (Anton, Bebas Neue, Poppins ExtraBold or similar) Thin fonts disappear over textures
Size Large: on a 1080x1920 frame, roughly 70 to 100 px It has to read on a small phone screen
Fill White or a bright brand color Contrast against most game scenes
Outline Thick, dark (black at 6 to 10 px) Separates the text from any background
Shadow Soft drop shadow Extra separation over bright skies and explosions
Words per line 2 to 4 Short lines can be read at a glance
Case UPPERCASE for short punchy lines Easier to scan, common in gaming clips
Animation Highlight the spoken word, or a small pop Guides the eye without becoming a distraction

Pick one style and keep it across your clips. A consistent style also makes your clips easier to recognize as yours.

Where should captions go in a vertical gaming clip?

In a cropped 9:16 clip, the game fills the frame, so captions go over the lower middle of the gameplay, above the platform’s caption area. In a fit layout (the whole 16:9 frame in the middle with a blurred fill), put captions in the band below the game, where they cover nothing.

Two rules either way: never over the crosshair or the action, and never over your facecam’s mouth. Our facecam layout guide shows how to plan the frame so the game, the webcam and the text each have their own space. For the crop itself, see how to convert gameplay to vertical video.

What about swearing in gaming captions?

Gaming voice is not always family friendly, and swearing spelled out in big captions is more visible than the same word heard once. A mask (f***) keeps the meaning and the energy without spelling the word out. Decide per clip: a mask on TikTok, the full word on a mature YouTube channel, for example.

Can captions be added automatically, offline?

GameClip is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that turns long gameplay recordings into a 16:9 highlight video and 9:16 clips for TikTok, Shorts and Reels. Its captions are transcribed on your computer, word by word, with Whisper models that download on first use (pick speed or accuracy); your audio never leaves the machine. It uses your separate mic or webcam track when there is one. You can correct any word, and the words it is unsure of are outlined so you know where to look. Then style the font, size, colors, outline, shadow, words per line, uppercase, a profanity mask and the animation (highlight, pop, karaoke or none). Captions are placed inside each platform’s safe area and burned in at export. Transcription is off by default, because on a recording with no voice it can invent words from game noise; turn it on for sessions where you talk. Download it here.

Your next step: take a clip where you talk, caption it with the settings in the table above, and watch it muted on your phone. If you can follow it without sound, the captions are doing their job.

FAQ

What is the best font for gaming captions?

A heavy, condensed display font such as Anton or Bebas Neue, or a bold rounded font such as Poppins ExtraBold. Pair it with a thick dark outline so it stays readable over any game scene.

How many words should a caption line have?

2 to 4 words for vertical clips. Short lines can be read at a glance while the viewer is also watching the gameplay. Long horizontal YouTube videos can take longer lines.

Are TikTok’s auto captions good enough for gaming clips?

They are a quick option, but you get less control over style, and they still need checking for game names and slang. Burned-in captions you made yourself look the same on every platform you post to.

Why do auto captions show random words in my gameplay?

Speech recognition can mistake music, explosions or game voices for speech when nobody is talking. Turn captions off for voiceless clips, or delete the false lines before export.

Does GameClip send my audio to the cloud for captions?

No. Captions are transcribed locally on your computer. Only the optional AI Director step sends anything to the cloud: small low-resolution frames and transcript text, never the video or audio.
