Xbox Clips: How to Get Them on Your PC and Edit Them

Nemo · · 6 min read

Xbox clips are the short videos your console saves when you press the Share button or choose “Record what happened.” To edit them on a computer, upload them automatically to OneDrive or your Xbox account, then download them from OneDrive, the Xbox app on Windows or the Xbox mobile app, or save them to a USB drive.

Console clips are easy to make and awkward to edit. The console’s own tools trim and share, but anything more (a highlight video, vertical clips with captions, a montage) happens on a computer. This guide covers getting the files there and what to do with them next.

How do you capture a clip on Xbox?

On Xbox Series X|S, press the Share button in the middle of the controller to save a clip of what just happened. Hold it to take a screenshot instead, or change what a press does in the capture settings. On Xbox One, press the Xbox button and choose the capture option from the guide.

You can also start a longer recording from the guide: press the Xbox button, go to Capture & share, and choose “Start recording.” Use this for a whole match rather than a single moment.

Where do you change the length and quality of Xbox clips?

Press the Xbox button, then go to Capture & share > Capture settings (it is also in Settings under Preferences > Capture & share). There you choose how long “Record what happened” goes back, the clip resolution, and where captures are saved. The longest clip you can save depends on the resolution and on where it’s saved: 4K clips are capped shorter than 1080p clips, and an external USB drive allows longer recordings than internal storage. We didn’t find one official table of the exact limits, and guides online disagree, so read the options your console shows. Microsoft has changed them with system updates.

How do you get Xbox clips onto a PC or Mac?

There are four ways. The first two need nothing but your Microsoft account.

Method Works on Best for
Automatic upload to OneDrive Any computer with a browser Getting every clip to a computer without touching the console
Xbox app on Windows (Captures) Windows 10/11 Browsing and downloading uploaded clips on a PC
Xbox mobile app iPhone, Android Grabbing a clip on your phone, then sharing or AirDropping it
USB drive Any computer Long recordings and many clips at full quality, no upload

Option 1: Upload to OneDrive automatically

In Capture settings, turn on automatic upload and pick OneDrive (or your Xbox network account). New captures upload in the background. On your computer, open OneDrive in a browser or the OneDrive app and find the clips in the Videos folder (usually under Xbox Game DVR), then download them.

Option 2: The Xbox app on Windows

Open the Xbox app on a Windows PC, signed in with the same account, and open your captures. Clips uploaded from the console show up there, and you can download them to a folder.

Option 3: The Xbox mobile app

The Xbox app on iPhone and Android lists your uploaded captures. Open a clip and save it to the phone. This is the quickest route when the clip is going straight to TikTok or Instagram from your phone.

Option 4: A USB drive

Format a USB drive for captures and set it as the capture location in Capture settings, so new captures are saved there. Then plug the drive into your computer and copy the MP4 files. This route skips uploads, so it suits long recordings.

If uploads fail, check the account’s privacy and online safety settings: a restriction on uploading captures blocks both OneDrive and Xbox network uploads.

What can you do with Xbox clips once they are on your computer?

Xbox captures are MP4 files, so any video editor opens them. What you make depends on where it’s going:

  • A highlight video for YouTube. Line up the best clips of the week, cut the dead time, and keep it 16:9. The highlight video guide covers pacing.
  • Vertical clips for TikTok, Shorts and Reels. Crop the 16:9 frame to 9:16 around the action, add captions and a hook in the first seconds. See how to turn gameplay into a vertical video.
  • A montage. Many short moments cut to music, usually 1 to 3 minutes.

Short “record what happened” clips are already trimmed, so editing them is quick. Full-match recordings are the opposite: an hour of footage with a few moments worth keeping.

How do you turn a long Xbox recording into highlights?

Copy the recording to your computer over USB or OneDrive, then go through it for the moments worth posting. You can scrub by hand in any editor, or let an app find them.

GameClip is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that turns long gameplay recordings into a 16:9 highlight video and 9:16 vertical clips with captions, zooms and sound effects. It reads console captures like any other MP4. Drop in one recording or a stack of clips and it orders them by date on one timeline. It finds the action by looking at the game, then shows every cut on a timeline you can change before you export. It doesn’t download from your Xbox account for you; the files come from OneDrive or a USB drive first. You can download it here.

Common Xbox clip problems

  • Clips don’t appear in OneDrive or the Xbox app: automatic upload is off, or the account’s settings block uploading captures.
  • Clip cuts off too early: raise the “Record what happened” length in Capture settings, or lower the clip resolution so a longer clip is allowed.
  • Long recordings stop after a short time: internal storage limits recording length; set a USB drive as the capture location.
  • 4K HDR clips look washed out on a PC: HDR footage needs an editor and display that handle HDR, or a conversion to SDR. Record in SDR if the clips are meant for social media.

What should you do next?

Turn on automatic upload to OneDrive tonight, play as usual, and check that the next clip lands on your computer. Once the files arrive on their own, pick the three best clips of the week and make one vertical video from each.

FAQ

Where are my Xbox clips saved?

On the console, in the capture library (Capture & share > Recent captures). If automatic upload is on, they are also in your Xbox network account or OneDrive, where the Xbox app and OneDrive can reach them.

How do I download Xbox clips to my PC?

Turn on automatic upload to OneDrive on the console, then download the files from OneDrive on your PC. You can also download uploaded captures from the Xbox app on Windows, or copy them from a USB drive set as the capture location.

How long can an Xbox clip be?

It depends on the resolution and the storage. “Record what happened” covers a short stretch, measured in minutes, and 4K clips are capped shorter than 1080p ones. Your console’s Capture settings list the exact choices. Recordings saved to an external USB drive can run much longer than those on internal storage.

Can I make TikToks from Xbox clips?

Get the clip to your phone through the Xbox mobile app, or to your computer, and crop it to 9:16 with captions. The TikTok gaming guide covers what works on the platform.

Does GameClip work with Xbox clips?

GameClip imports Xbox captures as MP4 files once they are on your Mac or PC, and builds a highlight video and vertical clips from them. It doesn’t connect to your Xbox account.
