How to Clip on PC: Save the Last 30 Seconds in Any Game
Nemo · · 6 min read
To clip on PC, turn on a replay buffer and press its save key right after the moment. In Windows 10 and 11, the built-in Xbox Game Bar does it with Win+Alt+G once “Record what happened” is on. NVIDIA cards save with Alt+F10, AMD cards with Ctrl+Shift+S, and OBS Studio with the Replay Buffer hotkey you set.
A clip is a moment you saved after it already happened. That is the difference from recording. A recorder writes everything from the moment you press start. A clipping tool keeps the last few seconds or minutes in memory and only writes a file when you ask for it. You can leave it on all session and only keep what was worth keeping.
Why do clips get lost?
You hit the shot, the round ends, and your hands are still on the mouse and keyboard. By the time you remember the clip key, the buffer has rolled past the moment, or the clipping tool was never on in the first place. The fix is to set the buffer up once, before you play, and pick a key you can reach without letting go of the game.
Which tools can clip on a PC?
Every tool below is free and uses your graphics card’s hardware encoder, so the hit to frame rate is small. Hotkeys are the defaults; each app lets you change them.
| Tool | Turn the buffer on | Save a clip | Where clips go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar (built in) | Settings > Gaming > Captures > “Record what happened” | Win+Alt+G | Videos > Captures |
| NVIDIA app | Alt+Z > Instant Replay (or Alt+Shift+F10) | Alt+F10 | Videos folder, per game |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Alt+R > Record & Stream > Instant Replay | Ctrl+Shift+S | Videos folder, per game |
| Steam Game Recording | Steam Settings > Game Recording > Record in background | Steam overlay (Shift+Tab) | Steam’s recordings folder |
| OBS Studio | Settings > Output > Replay Buffer, then Start Replay Buffer | The Replay Buffer hotkey you set | Your OBS recording folder |
| Medal | On by default after install | Its clip hotkey | Medal library + share link |
How do you clip with Xbox Game Bar?
Game Bar needs nothing installed, so it is the quickest way to start.
- Open Settings > Gaming > Captures and turn on Record what happened.
- Pick how far back it keeps. The default is 30 seconds.
- In a game, press Win+Alt+G right after the moment.
- Find the clip in Videos > Captures, or press Win+G and open the gallery.
Game Bar captures one app window at a time and doesn’t record your webcam. For anything more, use your graphics card’s app or OBS.
How do you clip with NVIDIA or AMD?
Both graphics card apps keep a rolling buffer called Instant Replay.
- NVIDIA: press Alt+Z, turn on Instant Replay, set its length and quality, then press Alt+F10 to save. The full walk-through is in how to clip with NVIDIA.
- AMD: press Alt+R to open the overlay, turn on Instant Replay under recording, then press Ctrl+Shift+S to save.
A buffer of 30 seconds to 2 minutes covers most plays. Longer buffers use more memory and disk, and they give you more footage to trim later.
How do you clip with OBS Studio?
OBS is the most work to set up and gives the most control, including a webcam and separate audio tracks.
- Open Settings > Output and tick Enable Replay Buffer. Set the maximum replay time, for example 60 seconds.
- In Settings > Hotkeys, give Save Replay a key you can reach mid-fight.
- Click Start Replay Buffer in the Controls panel before you play.
- Press your key after the moment. OBS writes the clip to your recording folder.
The rest of the setup, from the encoder to the audio tracks, is in OBS settings for recording gameplay.
What if you record the whole session instead?
Clipping only saves what you noticed. Plenty of good moments go unclipped because you were busy playing them, and some only look good on replay. That is the case for recording the whole session and finding the clips afterwards.
GameClip works this way. It is a desktop app for macOS and Windows with its own recorder: F9 starts, F10 pauses and resumes, F11 stops. While you play, F8 marks the last 30 seconds and F7 the last 2 minutes, the same reflex as a clip key, without cutting anything yet. When you stop, the session opens with your marks on it. GameClip then looks through the whole recording to find the plays you didn’t mark, with a model on your own computer or AI Director in the cloud. From those plays it builds a highlight video and vertical clips with captions, zooms and sound effects. Every cut stays editable before you export.
The Windows recorder is new in the 0.2 releases. If you already clip with Game Bar, NVIDIA, AMD or OBS, you can keep doing that and import those files instead; several files from one session are fine.
How long should a clip be?
| Where it goes | Clip length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing with friends | 15 to 30 s | The play and a second of context |
| TikTok, Shorts, Reels | 15 to 45 s, vertical | The hook has to land in the first seconds; see gaming Shorts length and hook |
| A YouTube highlight video | Several 20 to 90 s clips | Clips are the raw parts of a highlight video |
Keep the buffer longer than the clip you want. Trimming is easy; a moment that started before the buffer is gone for good.
Download and next step
Pick one clipping tool, turn its buffer on before your next session, and put the save key where your hand already is. If you’d rather play and sort it out afterwards, download GameClip and record the session with marks.
FAQ
How do I clip the last 30 seconds on PC?
Turn on background recording in Xbox Game Bar (Settings > Gaming > Captures) and press Win+Alt+G. On an NVIDIA card press Alt+F10 with Instant Replay on; on AMD press Ctrl+Shift+S; in OBS press your Save Replay hotkey with the Replay Buffer started.
What is the clip button on PC?
There isn’t one shared key. Win+Alt+G is the Windows default through Xbox Game Bar, Alt+F10 is NVIDIA’s and Ctrl+Shift+S is AMD’s. OBS and Medal use whatever key you set.
Does clipping lower FPS?
A little. A replay buffer is a recording that is always running, and hardware encoders (NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync) handle it on dedicated parts of the graphics card, so the drop is usually a few percent.
Where do my clips go on PC?
Xbox Game Bar saves to Videos > Captures. The NVIDIA app and AMD Software save to your Videos folder, in a folder per game by default. OBS saves to the recording path in Settings > Output.
Can I clip on PC without an app?
Yes. Xbox Game Bar is built into Windows 10 and 11. Turn on “Record what happened” once and Win+Alt+G saves the last 30 seconds in any game.
